Litter Overview

Ashmiyah Pop Art × Saphir De Lune Santanna (IMP France) have produced a very promising litter. The kittens are now 18 days old and today marks their first photo shoot.

During the first few weeks, I keep handling to a minimum beyond daily health checks, weight monitoring, and gentle socialisation. That makes this first photo session particularly exciting, as it is my first opportunity to closely assess each kitten’s developing features and the traits they have inherited.

I am very pleased with what I am seeing so far.

Tail, Coat & Pattern Development

The kittens have thick tails that flow naturally from the spine and maintain good width throughout.

The background colour is clean and the contrast is excellent. As expected at this age, the rosettes are beginning to open and stretch with growth, and their patterning will continue to develop significantly over the coming weeks.

Head Type & Expression

Their eye markings are already well defined, and several are showing the early signs of countershading, with pronounced cheek markings and strong facial contrast.

The chins are developing nicely, with good depth and strength that should contribute to balanced, mature head type as they grow. Four of the six kittens have complete, unbroken chin straps, while the remaining two have only minor interruptions.

Structure & Wild Type Traits

There is already plenty of spotting extending down the legs, and several kittens are showing large paws with prominent toe knuckling. This is one of the traits I particularly enjoy seeing in young Bengal kittens, as it reflects features found in small wildcat species such as the Asian Leopard Cat, Margay, and Ocelot.

Bengal kittens born June 1st at Ashmiyah Bengal Cats

The 1st of June, being the first day of winter in Australia, and Poppy’s kittens by Santanna decided to arrive. Born in the wee hours of the morning, everyone is healthy and doing beautifully.

Poppy is thriving and clearly very proud of her babies. The kittens are nursing well and doing exactly what newborns should be doing. It is always a relief when the first days go this smoothly.

The patterning and contrast on this litter is already impressive. Seeing that definition right out of the gate tells me this is going to be a very exciting litter to watch develop.

Over the next few weeks, there will be plenty of sleeping, nursing, and growing as these little ones get off to the best possible start. Poppy will also be enjoying some well-earned rest as she settles into caring for her very special brood.

The newborn stage is always remarkably short. In what feels like the blink of an eye, these tiny kittens will be transitioning from sleeping and nursing around the clock to becoming curious little explorers.
